Refurbishment of the promenade due to its poor condition, with aggregate disintegration and loss of colour.
The stamped concrete was in very poor condition. It had completely lost its stamped pattern and showed very severe aggregate disintegration. A complete loss of colour was also evident, meaning that it had lost its decorative appearance.
The causes of these defects may include proximity to the coast, as well as the passage of time itself, as it was laid 16 years ago. The saline environment in the Canary Islands is very aggressive, particularly on the east coast, where there are very strong gusts of wind. This factor can accelerate the ageing of concrete, causing serious structural problems.
There was only one possible solution: redo the surfacing. As we had limited height available for the new surfacing, we opted for a thin-layer stamped mortar (20 mm). This system allowed us to replicate the pattern underneath without having to break up the existing surface. Once the mortar work was complete, we applied a coating capable of withstanding the saline environment, which also gave the new surfacing a more decorative appearance.
