Research in the marine environment
BYO Reefs 3D
We design and manufacture structures using 3D printing, with materials incorporating recovered glass and volcanic ash. We study how their geometry and surfaces can support shelter provision and marine colonisation. The project involves research and observation of pieces at Banco Español de Algas, and includes a display at Aquarium Lanzarote.

What we do
BYO Reefs 3D connects BYOND’s materials research and additive manufacturing with the marine environment. We digitally design structures to study shelter provision and marine colonisation. As part of this work, we are developing ByoGlass, a material for 3D printing incorporating recycled glass and volcanic ash.
Geometry and surface
The cavities, surface roughness and internal passages of each structure are defined at the design stage. Their aim is to provide shelter and settlement surfaces for different marine organisms.
Research and observation
Two pieces are undergoing colonisation studies at Banco Español de Algas, where changes to their surfaces are observed. The project also includes a display at Aquarium Lanzarote, bringing the work to the public.
Connection with BYOND
BYO Reefs 3D grew out of BYOND Canarias’ laboratory and 3D manufacturing activities. It shares materials formulation, testing and improvement work with Zoruflex and BYOND Technology.
